new install vista procedures

New install of VISTA procedures...

I would like to install VISTA as a dual boot option with my XP PRO. I have an 80GB hard drive using only 30%. Here are my questions:
1. Will VISTA install allow me to create a new partition on which to put VISTA? If not, how do I create a new 40GB partition?
2. How do I insure that when I reboot, I will have the dual boot option to boot XP PRO or VISTA.
Thanks so much.

You might try using a partition manager like Partition Magic to creat your second partition. I finally got it installed on my HP laptop with a 40 gig drive and now when the computer starts, it shows me the option of booting from vista or an "Earlier version of Windows", so I assume you would get a boot option something like that. -- If you can read this, thank a teacher. Since you are reading it in English, thank a Soldier.

Thanks, John. Does XP PRO have a way of creating a partition? I hate to buy Partition Magic for a one-time use. Let me know, and thanks. Rich

Im not sure if it does or not. I have XP home. BTW, I made the mistake of installing Vista OVER XP and now, if I select that "Earlier" OS in the boot loader all I get is a black screen and have to restart the machine. Now the only way I'm gonna get the thing back to XP is to use my HP Restore disks. (bummer) -- If you can read this, thank a teacher. Since you are reading it in English, thank a Soldier.

Check out this web-page for a how-to on what you are wanting to do (Creating a new partion using XP drive formatting tool and installing Vista on the new partition).

I followed these instructions with a new drive and had no problems.

Creating a new partition on an existing drive in XP is DESTRUCTIVE and will wipe out XP.
Only
something like Partition Magic can do it. XP CANNOT. "kh4130" wrote in message
